Luke 5:1-11
Luke 5:1-11, So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, 2 and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. 4 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James
and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.
Man at the core is selfish. Their language is I, Me, and Myself! Christian life is dying to self. No one comes to that stage in a single day! Today is a start from few of the people who are getting baptised today. Every day they are being changed and renewed like Jesus Christ. We call this as Sanctification in theology.
This incident is recorded in Matthew 4:18-22.
Mark 1:16-20
John 1:40-42 V 1, So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, Lake Gennesaret. Lake of Galilee called by Matthew and Mark. Sea of Tiberius by Apostle John.
Multitude waiting to hear the word of God. V 2, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. Washing their nets shows it happens in the morning. After their work was over.
Usually, men go to for fishing in the evening and returned in the morning. V 3, Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
Jesus goes to Simon later he was changed a s Peter. Peter who said you are the Christ in Matthew 16 Peter was the one who become the leader of the church. We learn through experience. Peter is with Jesus. Jesus sitting in the boat and teaching the multitude.
Jesus was teaching to the people in the shore whereas Peter was with Him and learning. Men what you go through in private but it is also witnessed by the people around you.
When you become a Christian people watch your life from a distance. Christian has no private life!
Luke 9:58, And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
This is why today they will openly confess that I am not ashamed to follow Jesus Christ as the Saviour of my life. Nowhere to hide! Break cover from everything. Your family is watching. Co-workers are watching. Everyone is watching.
V 4, When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 2 Issues.
- a) Professional issue
Jesus by profession Carpenter.
Peter is a fisher.
- b) Time issue
There is a perfect time for fishing. People do not fish during the day. V 5, But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” We toiled all night and caught nothing.
Peter reply shows that Jesus may not the perfect time. Nevertheless, I will do so.
Why you need to take this Baptism? It does not make sense. How going down in the water is going to anything? All his life Peter was fishing. But today he heard from Jesus to do the fishing at imperfect time. Everyone of you who are taking baptism today God had a time.
For some it was in their 70s but for some in their 17! Do not rely on what you have used to do!
Obedience to God is the first step in your life even when it does not make sense. You may have tried to live your life with your terms and conditions and your best effort but today you have come to understand that only by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ you can be saved.
V 6-7, And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.
When you follow God, you will witness how and what are the ways in which God bless you and it spills over the people around. Peter must ask for help for the people to share the blessing from God. First you need to show what the Lord has done to you to your own companions.
Peter called his business partners, and they filled their boats. Now you have received your eternal life and it should be spontaneous for you to call all those who are associated with.
V 8, When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” Why would peter say that when he was blessed by God abundantly? I am a sinner! It is one thing to do something and other thing to do with faith.
Peter did what the Lord told; he was just going through the motion. All along all your life you have been going through your motion. Coming to church is like going through motion. Coming to church believing God to do something.
When you realise how God has blessed you then you know what a wretched sinner you are? Word of Christ brought forth a great miracle. Today the same word of God brings you to spiritual birth.
Why do you do what you do?
What is the motive behind?
Baptism did not save you! You are saved so you take baptism! V 9-10, For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.”
Jesus tells them now on you will catch men! Jesus takes the background and ask him to use it for kingdom building. You wherever you are now your motive becomes working for the kingdom. Your office is the mission field. Your school is the mission field.
Your business is the mission field. V 11, So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him. Jesus called Peter. But all followed Jesus!
Now on your not going after your glory but the crown of Life!
